This film was first introduced to me as a device to stir thought on the idea of memory and the future. This 1982 American dystopian science fiction thriller film touches upon the idea of the preservation of the past within the future through memory. I was at first shocked by the way in which the film was directed; the melancholy, uniform way in which the set was portrayed provided me with the tone of my project. Initially the film simulated a highly populated city that formed a limbo like state for its inhabitants. Does this film embody a new world that holds onto the old? There is a scene in the end of the film, where one of lead charaters says "all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... time to die". This line summarised the intent of the film, as for me, it mean't that you cannot live forever and have to change with a changing world. On the other hand, it highlights the pain of a memory but also that a memory can be cherished and evolve with a present outlook. This reminded me of a few personal possessions that were given to me and although most of them i recieved on the passing of family members, the sentiment will always remain. Blade Runner, although a drastic interpretation of a future, shed light on the way in which my project could be structured.
