3DD FINAL DAY

This could almost become the structural design of a building!

Today i had the task of making a structure the withheld 3 balls that could not touch one another using only a glue gun and spaghetti. The design and innovation of my piece was evaluated among others and then we had to use the skills learnt from the previous days about structure support and embed pieces of paper that would make the structure strong. This was then tested, when a basketball was dropped from a significant height onto the structures. None of the structures survived however it was a pretty cool experiment.

I learnt how to use minimal equipment to create a structural piece that was innovative and experimental. This tasked proved the most exciting as i have never created something like this before that had an outcome that could be transformed into something else.

I didn't enjoy however the smaller prototype bridges as i would have preferred to use more complex materials instead of just paper. Despite this the larger bridge task was exciting as i was able to take lead in certain areas to make sure that the end result was sound. As we were able to use both cardboard, tape, bamboo sticks and rubber bands, the task then became more of a challenge for me.

At the end however the bridge came together and managed to drive a toy car over it, and it also included a mixture of the groups design qualities to it.

STRUCTURAL CONCEPTS.
Today, we began the 3DD rotation week by creating a structure that could undertake the pressure of a water bottle. ....My structure did not. :) The concept behind this made sense however the support within did not. This helped me improve the ways in with i constructed my next task. Afterwards i was set a task to design something out of cardboard and tape that would support the weight of a person. Mine managed to stay standing.

Today i designed miniature models of bridges which showed innovation and design individuality. Later on i designed a large scale bridge held between two tables that could only have support on the ground as two singular points. Using bamboo sticks, tape, rubber band and 10 pieces of cardboard my group managed to construct a sturdy bridge that could then later be driven across by a remote control car. Our bridge was successful.

                                                           TRANSFORMED VISIONS
                                                                GERHARD RITCHER

                                                                 CAGED PAINTINGS

Lets talk transformed visions! The 1932-2013 German artist Gerhard Richter produced a series of abstract paintings and is considered one of the largest selling artists of the 21st century. "One has to believe in what one is doing, one has to commit oneself inwardly, in order to do painting"(Richter,2013). Taken from the words of Richter himself, painting is dedication and emotive. The colours depict a certain refrain of character, the dynamic shards of bold primary and secondary colours contrast significantly against the monotonous grey. Richter's technique separates the artist from the public's insight of the piece. Nevertheless the layering technique of the oil paint shows imminent expression. As a piece there is an almost confrontational state of emotion. War for most can fuel a cursive alternative interpretation of art. For Richter it payed off as his work plays well as interior art. The cold and yet distant effect of his work becomes a blurred setting for decor. As a fellow practitioner of oil painting, the squeegee abstractions brought to light an infusion  of graphical design, interior simplicity and the fine arts. As an exhibitor that shows collections ranging 5 decades, his work shadows a running social climate which highlights his sharp, decayed graphical vocabulary. This curiosity evoking work, contains a layering technique that forms texture and notes of detail that is said inspired by John Cage. Richter's exhibits "no direct link  between any particular work in this series and any composition by cage"(Transformed visions, Tate,2013), however engages similar contemporary vision. As an exhibitor at Tate Modern, in the transformed visions section, Richter's work provides an understanding of composition from a grass root level. Engaging the presumed upper clientele region, Richter's intimate large scale work considers a modern sophistication that naturally grows over time. Over the 50 year period, his work stands tall and eloquent. Visiting the free exhibitions of transformed visions at the Tate Modern inspires great minds and a timeless appreciation for abstract art.

lecture evening

I just came out of my first lecture to day which was on a talk by who does illustration as a profession. Illustration didn't really speak to me specifically, however it was nice to listen about the pro active way in which she works and promotes her business. And it spoke to me also as i have my own cake business and what i go through on a day to day basis, organising my own work load and being my own admin, product maker, business planner, adviser and delivery man; i saw reflections in the process of making her business larger as i am mine. Overall it was a good insight into business management.
This was some of her work

Poster Design - Backwards Running.

Today i learnt about the three core software used in design, this being Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. My task was to create a poster that reflected the past few tasks that i had completed, which links to memory. The image used was appropriate as she looks as if she is looking into the past as things...memories, pass her by. I chose i photo that allowed me to blend easily with very little seems.
This reflected the passing of time through street lights and moving city lights. It also depicts the pace of movement through memory by the use of the train tracks. I was able to test my editing skills using Photoshop and i think i have done well so far. If i was able to use my own photos within the task, i  believe the overall individuality of the poster would have been better. I used Illustrator for the first time today and it went rather successfully. The "backwards running" caption was almost made into a logo. I like the way in which i brought through the shocking bold red against the black and white image and it is ow a consistent theme running throughout my work. However next time with illustrator i might play around with curved writing for experimental purposes but for this task i think the font was appropriate. Finally i used InDesign for the first time today as well. It was a new concept to me however the layout of the software imitates the layout of Photoshop and so i was comfortable using it after a while. I used InDesign to add in the body text.

FASHION

Later on today, i used my fashion design pieces to create a garment. Focusing on a state of emotion and an area of the body, a partner and i went around in rotation to use the other students work to create garments also. This task was interesting as i had to use my sper of the moment creativity to design a garment that fit the specific criteria. I feel that the work that i achieved managed to resonate a sophisticated simplicity that i would say is more my style of design. Quite a few of the students thought that my work was 'very well constructed' and thought that i would naturally suit the fashion pathway due to my instinctive skills. This feedback allowed for improvement as i became more elaborate with my designs.  From this task i learnt how to design spontaneously and trust my design instincts.

I thought that my pieces of work were edgy and consistent. This is because it formed sharpness and silhouettes sustained throughout all garments. I found having to work with other peoples designs slightly challenging because i am best able to design pieces when i have an initial thought process for it. Nevertheless this bettered the way in which i work with other's various design styles.

My planning skills can be improved by the following design research prep and also producing a wider range of work at the beginning so that i have more to experiment and work with later on. This will improve the body of work i have and also give me more experimental choice so that my final piece is most effective.

I was surprised by the various styles that were designed during this task and i was surprised by the new garment concepts that i could then appreciate. I can definitely use these skills for the next day by getting stuck into my work and being experimental.

3D design and fashion textile

Today we finished the fashion and textile course introduction week. We finished the week by making 3D designs on manicons. The task was with using influence from the smaller objects that we had previously created to focus on an area of the body and make a garment for it. I decided to focus on the back. The spine provided me with a frigged outline that would up hold structure whilst also allowing room for sensuality with the backless aspect.

This was my initial design.

                                                              TIMELESS CAUTION

I then decided to model someone in the garment to provide personality to the piece. I initially photographed the model by a circular window. The contrast to the heavily spiked garment played well against the soft circular shape. I then wanted to shoot the piece looking out of the window as it portrayed strength and dominance, especially as the model was standing at such a height above the surrounding scenery.

We then found a slightly more secluded area that played against a plain white wall. I staged the piece as almost a warning sign. The shape jagged edges, along with the metal red frame spoke for an alarming photograph.

I also photographed her against a mirror. I figured the shape of the backless piece would capture well in reflection, as you would be able to see it in different angles.

Paper Garments

Garment rotation using other students design pieces.

Fashion week introduction

Today i started my fashion week. It was a nice introduction into the fashion workd as at the moment my future prospects is along the lines of fashion advertising. Today i brought in a range of textured and coloured papers in order to create 3D designs. In the first stages of today i managed to create a 5 pieces that related to my memory reserch and planning items. I formed my pieces based on the briefcase, vogue magazine and jewel box. This provided me with good structure and text to experiment with. The masculinity of the briefcase lent way for my first design.
.
This was inspired by the briefcase as the masculine boxy shape developed into the fashion format of a shoulder pad. The triangular shape that exhibits strength in build inspired this 3 dimensional piece.

THis second piece was inspired by the combination of masculinity and femininity brought out by the briefcase and the oriental jewel box. The box inspired a sensuality that can also be shown throughtthe figure of a woman. This art deco style cut out of a hour glassed shaped woman is held up by a long spine like masculine representation.

This particular piece was inspired by the japaneae ying and yang sign, however a deconstructed version of it. The striking red line is prominent throughout my work highlighting the connection between the ying and the yang.

This piece was inspired rather literally by my grandmas jew box. The striking colour is shown through the bold red fabric and the grey scale prints of the glasses imitate a layering of black pipig detail on the box lid.
